Gloucestershire County Council Press Release

Don't take a chance with your chimney - keep it clean

Gloucestershire people are being reminded to 'keep it clean' following an exceptionally high number of chimney fires in the county for the time of the year.

Last weekend, Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service attended five chimney fires as local people start to light up their open fires and log burners ready for the colder winter months.

The service is urging people to remember the following important advice:

Despite the fact that most chimney fires are preventable, latest statistics show that there are more than 7,000 chimney fires a year in England.

Cllr Will Windsor-Clive, cabinet member for community safety, said: "Our fire and rescue service does a great job for us year round, but all too often they are occupied dealing with chimney fires in the winter months."

"Almost all chimney fires could be avoided through proper chimney maintenance. Please help our firefighters by having your chimney swept regularly."
