How We Work

Working together for a safer Gloucestershire

The aim of Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service is to promote safer communities by preventing accidents and emergencies from happening, as well as protecting people and the environment from imminent danger.

We do this under the guidance and influence of central and local government.

Central Government

Communities and Local Government is a central government department and is responsible for developing legislation, national policy, advice and support for fire authorities, amongst other things. In particular, much has been done on the modernisation of the Fire and Rescue Service under the Fire and Rescue Service National Framework.

We are a service of Gloucestershire County Council, and committed to its vision of making the County a better place to live, work and learn.

In order to achieve this, Gloucestershire County Council has a Corporate Strategy, which sets outs its vision for the organisation as a whole over the next three years and highlights how it intends to get there.

Local Government

The County Council has three core principles. These are:

•Social inclusion
•Sustainability
•Fairness and Diversity

GFRS is an important service of the County Council - therefore, our vision and mission statement must be relevant to the larger aims of the county council as a whole.

So what are those corporate aims?

•Support those in need in our communities.
Manage and enhance the Gloucestershire environment
•Meet local transport needs effectively
•Support and encourage a thriving local economy
•Provide learning throughout life

•Promote safer communities

At first glance, you may think GFRS only contributes to the last aim, but think again. We support vulnerable people through our community safety iniatives. Specifically: -

Sparky the SpiderThe Young

Sparky the Spider aims to educate children from pre-school and Key Stage 1 about the danger of fire in a fun way.

Learn Not to Burn is a fully co-ordinated schools fire safety programme, which aims to educate children to take personal responsibility for the protection of themselves, their homes and the property of others in the event of a fire.

The Firescape Programme is aimed at young people in the last 2 years of compulsory education, with challenging behaviour and provides a learning experience outside the normal school environment.

The Vulnerable

The Caring Together Scheme is a partnership working scheme aimed to help:-

•Very young children who maybe involved in a fire at home
•People suffering from mental health problems and those with addictions to drugs or alcohol.

To date there are over 650 carers trained.

fire crews visiting a family at homeFiresafe is an initiative involving local fire crews visiting homes to deliver advice on preventing and escaping from fire and providing early warning through fitting smoke alarms.

We help to maintain our environment by preventing large-scale pollution from emergency incidents, which may involve chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear emergencies we now have the Incident Response Unit. Further information can be found on these vehicles at "Our Vehicles".

Furthermore, effective local transport and a thriving local economy are goals that we contribute to not only by raising public awareness on road safety issues but also be reinstating essential transport links as quickly as possible after incidents.

And although we are not teachers, we contribute to the education of the people of Gloucestershire through safety campaigns, Open Days, Schools visits and advice giving. Not to mention the positive role models we provide to an every-growing number of local communities.

So maybe the question isn't how we contribute to the County Council's vision but how much more we can achieve.
