Community Safety Project

Research

Understanding the risks in our Communities through knowledge & consultation

One of the key objectives of the Life Skills Centre is to reduce the level of unintentional accidents, injuries and deaths. Whilst national research has identified the causes, it is essential that these reflect the needs of Gloucestershire's communities.

Significant attention has been invested into analysing data gathered by a range of partner agencies to identify the risk and safety issues. In order to validate this a survey has been sent to people working with individuals in our communities to understand if the actual risks reflect the perceived risk & safety issues.

Understanding the risks – young people

As the graph below indicates, over a six year period 46% of the 6517 young people admitted to the Accident & Emergency unit were as a result of a fall, and a further 1231 admissions were as a result of an accident. The third major category was road traffic related causes.

The highest age risk group is 11-13 year olds with an average of 579 accidents over the six years, followed by the under 5s. Although overall more accidents happen to children aged 2.
