Press Release from Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue Service
Chance to become
a firefighter in your local community
Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue Service is looking to stengthen it’s team of retained duty firefighters serving in communites all over the county.
Retained duty firefighters are essential members of the community, more than 80% of the county’s fire & rescue cover is provided by local people whose normal jobs or roles may be as diverse as factory workers, joiners, builders, plumbers, window cleaners, company directors, but double as qualified firefighters able to attend a wide variety of emergency incidents including fighting fires, chemcial spills, road traffic accidents & rescue of animals.
Retained duty fire fighters are “on call” from home or work rather than on duty at a station, however retained stations respond to emergencies 24 hours a day. Retained personnel in Gloucestershire are also trained in other specialist skills such as Cliff & Water Rescue, Breathing Apparatus Support, Damage Control and can be called upon to provide these skills at major incidents anywhere in the county. The county’s Fire & Rescue Service couldn’t operate without the dedication & skill of these people. Depending on the station staff are working from and the number of incidents staff attend, monthly pay could be between £300 to £600 plus.
Kevin Pottinger, Group Manager for Retained Duty Stations in Gloucestershire said “We are looking for members of the community who are interested in joining the Service on the retained duty system where firefighters are on call for a set number of hours each week. People interested must be able to reach their local fire station within five minutes of receiving a call from work and home. Joining the Fire & Rescue Service as a retained duty firefighter is a very rewarding and worthwhile opportunity. You will be part of a professional, well trained team working with the most up to date equipment, and working together to protect and educate the community from fire and other emergencies.”
Roadshows are being planned by GFRS at the following stations:-
