Fire & Rescue Service in Cheltenham.
Around 7,500 people attended a community safety road
show organised by Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue
Service in Cheltenham.
The event included the first
appearance of the fire service's new state of the art
inflatable smoke house, which will be used in schools
as part of the "Learn
Not to Burn" programme.
Firefighters were also promoting
the need for every home to have at least one working
smoke alarm.
The event was staged at the Tesco
Store in Collets Drive, Cheltenham.
Gloucestershire Chief Fire Officer Terry Standing said, "The
nature of our work is changing from intervention to
prevention. We welcome any opportunity to meet the
public and the number of people using the store made
it an ideal venue for us."
"This was an excellent opportunity
for members of our Community Safety Team to meet the
public and to spread the word that fire kills - but
that it can be prevented."
"Part of the event was for staff to gather referrals for members of the
public to receive free home fire risk checks as a part of our "FireSafe" scheme
and over forty people deposited details requesting visits that we may not otherwise
have received".
Tesco Store Manager Justin Sketchley said "We were
delighted to be able to support the Fire Service with
their safety campaign."
"We had a fabulous response
to the event from our customers and the feedback
we received from them has been entirely positive.
This is just the sort of event that supports the
Tesco in the Community initiative and we look forward
to hosting Gloucestershire Fire Service at our store
in the future."
