The Triangle of Fire

Do you know how fire burns?

Any fire needs:

• Heat

• Fuel

• Air

Heat, fuel and air are called the ‘triangle of fire’. If we remove any one of these the fire will always die out.

If you squirt water on a fire it turns to steam and takes away the heat. The fire will cool rapidly and go out.

If you cover a candle flame and keep out the air this would not allow the flame to breathe. The candle would go out.

If you were baking with a gas cooker and you turned off the gas, you would be removing the fuel. The gas flame would go out.

Fire is rather like us - we also need heat to keep us warm, food or fuel to feed us, and air to breathe.
